What is Guna Milan?
Guna Milan (Ashtakoota Milan) is the classical Vedic method of matching two charts for marriage. It compares the two birth Moons in 8 kootas worth 36 points in all: Varna (1), Vashya (2), Tara (3), Yoni (4), Graha Maitri (5), Gana (6), Bhakoot (7) and Nadi (8).
The score is the start, not the end: the texts weigh the doshas behind it and their exceptions, Mangal dosha in both charts, and in South India the Rajju and Vedha checks — all of which the report reads for you.
What the Score Means
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a score below 18 a sure sign the marriage will fail?
No. Guna Milan is one important tool, not the only one. Mangal dosha, the 7th house, the Navamsa and the dasha periods weigh as much, and a classical exception can cancel a dosha that costs points. The report reads all of them together.
What is Nadi dosha, and when is it cancelled?
Nadi dosha forms when both birth stars share the same Nadi (Adi, Madhya or Antya) — the koota then scores 0 of 8. Classical texts cancel it when both Moons are in one sign but different nakshatras, in one nakshatra but different signs, or in one nakshatra in different padas. The same nakshatra and the same pada is the one case no exception lifts.
And Bhakoot dosha?
Bhakoot dosha forms when the two Moon signs are 2/12, 5/9 or 6/8 from each other. It is cancelled when both Moon signs share one lord (Aries–Scorpio, Taurus–Libra, Gemini–Virgo, Sagittarius–Pisces, Capricorn–Aquarius), or when the two lords are friends both ways.
Why might another site give a slightly different score?
Our points follow the classical tables exactly as AstroSage scores them. Some tools hand back points when an exception cancels a dosha, or score Vashya by whole sign; we keep the classical score and judge the exceptions separately, so you see both.
Can doshas be remedied?
Yes. The classical texts give a remedy (upaya) for each — the report names the ones your match needs: for Nadi dosha the Maha Mrityunjaya mantra and a Nadi dosha nivaran puja, for a Manglik mismatch a Mangal shanti puja, and so on.
