The Complete 10-Card Spread

Celtic Cross — The Master Spread

The Celtic Cross is the most comprehensive tarot spread in use — ten cards that map every dimension of your situation: its heart, its challenge, what lies beneath, what is fading, what is emerging, your internal stance, external influences, your deepest hopes and fears, and the final outcome. Best used when you need a complete picture rather than a quick answer.

Understanding the Celtic Cross

Originating in the early 20th century and popularized by A.E. Waite in The Pictorial Key to the Tarot (1910), the Celtic Cross has become the standard "deep dive" spread used by professional tarot readers worldwide. Its ten positions create a complete map of any situation.

Reading the Spread as a Whole

Each card should first be read in isolation, then as part of the broader narrative. Cards 1–6 form the cross at the centre (the situation), while cards 7–10 form the staff on the right (the path and outcome). Patterns of suit, number, and theme reveal deeper layers.

Cross (Cards 1–6)
The heart of the matter — present, challenge, foundation, past, future, and self.
Staff (Cards 7–10)
The trajectory — attitude, environment, hopes/fears, and final outcome.
Major Arcana
When several Major Arcana appear, the situation involves deep karmic forces and major life themes.
Court Cards
Court cards often represent specific people in the situation — read them as characters, not just energies.
